Description

Circa 1840. Pair of 1 ?-storey symmetrical rectangular improvement farm buildings with central gables flanking entrance piers to courtyard. Snecked and dressed sandstone; ashlar long and short quoins, projecting sills, crow stepped gables.

NW BUILDING: SW (PRINCIPAL) ELEVATION: sliding machinery door, centrally placed rectangular window to gablehead, crow steps tooled to form gable end, beaked skewputts to front and each flanking end, cast-iron weathervane surmounting; single storey with door on right to left flank, further door to left return; single storey with rectangular window to right flank, oculus to gable head, chimney to left rear.

SE BUILDING: SW (PRINCIPAL) ELEVATION: multi-gabled L-shaped complex. Central gable end: rectangular window to ground floor, projecting sill, adjoining vertically placed oculi to gablehead, crowsteps tooled to form gable-end, beaked skewputts to front and each flanking end, chimneys breaking through left side of roof; single storey with window off centre right to left flank, further door to left of left return; single storey with rectangular window to right flank.

REAR ELEVATION: partially converted H-plan block extending to NE to rear with piended slate roof, not seen 2000.

8-pane timber horizontal fixed glazing to most, some with later in-fill. Piended slate roof with original Carron cast-iron roof lights with central astragals; mostly lead ridging, some terracotta ridge tiles. Later rainwater goods.

INTERIOR: NW building houses implements and machinery; SE building converted for office/domestic use.

GATEPIERS: coursed tooled square red sandstone blocks, grey square stone copes, pyramid capitals surmounting. Gates missing.

Statement of Interest

These farm buildings once formed the entrance to an enclosed courtyard. The rear of the complex has been altered to make room for modern farm barns and buildings, but the fronts remain largely unaltered. The gatepiers that once support the farmyard gate still remain although the original gate is no longer there. This farm steading shares many similar details with the nearby complex at Longthorn, Easter Millerhill - another planned improvement steading from the same time. This complex is found to the rear of Newton Farm and Newton House and Dovecot, all listed separately.
