Description

Mid-late 19th century. Free-standing, 2-sided, hollow, cast-iron milepost. Columnar plinth; neck band to shaft; rectangular directional faces; painted white with black painted lettering; arrows; trim and surmounting finial. Indicator panel with N pointing arrow and lettering; 'RUMBLING BRIDGE ? MILES'; indicator panel with S pointing arrow and lettering; 'DUNFERMLINE 2 MILES'.

Statement of Interest

Manufactured at the Bonnybridge Foundry. The milepost is slightly damaged with a small piece missing from the top and it formerly indicated Rumbling Bridge as 14 ? miles away. A similar milepost in Dunfermline Parish is also situated along the A823, NW of Outh (NT 0582 9498). 3 further mileposts are situated on the Dunfermline to Rumbling Bridge section of the A823 and are listed in Saline Parish (NT 043 955, NT 038 955, NT 022 977). They are of particular interest for their survival and the continuous run on a short stretch of road.
