Description

Reid and Forbes, 1933. Symmetrical piend-roofed 19-bay Art Deco/Neo-classical school block, single storey to S, lower single storey wing to W, and 3-storey piend-roofed wing (technology block) to N. Cream sandstone, ashlar to S, snecked rubble twith ashlar dressings o sides and rear. Base course, cill course (at 1st floor to S, 3rd floor to sides and rear), cornice, and parapet with loopholes. Long and short quoins. Moulded surrounds and projecting cills to windows.

S (PRINCIPAL) ELEVATION: 3 outer bays slightly advanced, with buckle quoins and loop-holed parapet; shallow pediments with Heriot star and acroteria, decorative moulded surrounds and bracketed cills to centre windows. Slightly advanced centre bay: 2-leaf timber panelled door with arched fanlight in key-consoled chamfered round-arched surround, flanked by fluted Doric columns; Heriot arms flanked by obelisks in raised parapet above.

N WING: 3-storey technology wing; 7-bays to Vennel, 3 bays to N and E. Regularly fenestrated. 2-leaf timber panelled door to centre of Vennel elevation with decorative timber moulding and fanlight with 3 circular panes in moulded surround with bracketed cornice. Windows to centre bay at 1st floor (W and N elevations)in recessed pedimented moulded surround. Relieving arches to door and ground and 1st floor windows in penultimate bays to left and right.

15-pane glazing to timber sash and case windows. Graded grey slates. Grey painted down pipes with dated (GR 1933) hoppers.

Statement of Interest

The A Group comprises the main building, the Examination Hall, the Chemistry Block, the Preparatory and Technology Blocks, the Science Block and the gatehouse, terraces, War Memorial, boundary walls, railings and gates. Reid and Forbes use edited details of the original Heriot Hospital with pared-down Art Deco/classical restraint. Reid and Forbes made something of a speciality of schools, good examples being Castlebrae Annexe (Harewood Road) and the Royal High Primary (Northfield Broadway).
