Description

Mid-later 19th century cottage and outbuildings; early 20th century threshing barn and byres. Row of single storey cottage and 2 outbuildings line roadside; L-plan farm buildings to rear including circa 1910 threshing barn and flanking byres. Flagstone walls; harling remains in places. Alternate canted corner stones to farm building quoins.

COTTAGE

3-bays. Central door; flanking windows to principal (S elevation). Single window to right to W gable; 2 windows to rear; plain elevation to E. 4-pane timber sash and case windows; replacement door. Pitched, stone slated roof; crowstepped gables; corniced gable end stacks; circular cans. Rooflights.

CENTRAL OUTBUILDING

2 doors to principal (S) elevation; window to far left; lean-to to right; door in left return. Pitched roof; large flagstones; small glazing panes set within roof flags; aisins.

OUTBUILDING TO E

Central door to principal (S) elevation; flanking windows. Pitched outshot to left; central window; door in right return. Window to E gable wall. Rear outshot. Pitched, underseamed flagstone roof to cottage; small glazing panes set within roof flags. Overseamed flagstone roof to front outshot; aisins.

L-PLAN STEADING

Central 2-storey threshing barn; door off-centre to left; ground floor window to right and left. 1st floor loft opening to right. Single storey building to right of barn; central door; flanking windows. Door to right in E gable wall. Single storey building to left of barn; central floor; flanking windows. Advanced wing to right; windows and doors in right return. Rear of threshing barn; threshing door off-centre to right; 1st floor loft opening above right of door; ground floor window to left; loft door above. Pitched, Caithness slate roofs; rooflights.

INTERIOR: Only threshing barn seen, 2000. Threshing machine remains.

Statement of Interest

Skail is Norse for Hall. The 1st Edition OS map shows an earlier barn, possibly with kiln and horse mill which has been replaced by the present threshing barn. The 2 single storey outbuildings may have been stables and byres.
