Description

Early 19th century. Round-arched grotto with rusticated voussoirs and carved bearded head to key-stone; spring flows from pointed-arched recess into gadrooned stone basin behind fleur-de-lys-headed cast-iron railings (broken). Stone arches above with remains of hydraulic ram and circular gin house behind fragments of cast-iron railings.

Statement of Interest

Situated below Benrig House, on the edge of the river Tweed. The well is at the bottom of the bank, the mule gang directly above. The well is a romantic addition to the landscape, but the OS map of 1863 shows it grouped with other features with a more practical function, including the hydraulic ram, or mule gang (which has some rocker gear still intact), a gas works, associated with the house, and other features, including an

ice house, linked to the commercial exploitation of the Tweed salmon fishing.
