Description

John Steell, 1875. Finely carved dark stone Celtic cross on rubble plinth with inscription on red granite plaque.

Statement of Interest

The A group comprises the Esplanade itself and the group of monuments including the Statue of the Duke of York, the Scottish Horse Memorial, the 72nd Highlanders Memorial, the 78th Highlanders Memorial, the Monument to Colonel MacKenzie and the Statue of Earl Haig (all separately listed). In memory of Colonel Douglas Mackenzie, CB, 'who saw much service in the field, and deserved well of his country in war and peace... died on duty at Dartmouth, 24th August, 1873.'
