Circa 1880. 2-storey, 3-bay gabled house converted to classrooms. Red and cream brick with contrasting cream brick dressings, ashlar cills and lintels. Round-headed window. Stone mullions and chamfered arrises.
SE (PRINCIPAL) ELEVATION: symmetrical. Slated swept-roof canopy on decorative timber brackets to centre bay at ground with panelled 2-leaf timber door and bipartite windows in flanking bays to each floor, those to 1st floor breaking eaves into gableheads.
SW ELEVATION: 3-bay elevation with single windows to outer bays at ground and round-headed bipartite breaking into gablehead at 1st floor.
NW (REAR) ELEVATION: 3 windows to each floor, those to ground grouped to left, those to 1st floor with outer windows breaking eaves into piended dormerheads, that to centre 1st floor blind.
NE ELEVATION: gabled bay to centre with altered door at ground and stair window above.
Plate glass glazing in timber sash and case windows, margined stair window and modern glazing to SE. Grey slates. Coped gablehead stacks with full-complement of cans. Overhanging eaves with exposed rafters and plain bargeboarding.
The brickwork to sides and rear forms an intricate chequered pattern. During the rectorship of Thomas Tyacke, it was decided to erect a sanatorium on a small hill behind the school, known as 'The Knoll' and 'Tom-a-Crochter'. The building was subsequently used as a residence for boarding pupils and is now (2001) the Music Department.
