Description

Circa 1840. 2-storey and attic, 3-bay, baronial style corner bank with single storey wing and attached former bank house, on corner site falling steeply to NW and SW. Stugged squared and snecked rubble with contrasting raised ashlar quoins and margins. Base course, string courses and eaves cornice. Roll-moulded doorcase, segmental-headed windows to ground; stepped hoodmoulds and corbels; stop-chamfered arrises.

NE (ENTRANCE) ELEVATION: slightly set-back rounded angle to left with hoodmoulded deep-set 2-leaf panelled timber door and deep plate glass fanlight, hoodmoulded stone mullion bipartite window above giving way to small window with crowstepped pediment and attenuated conical roof with decorative cast-iron finial. Regular fenestration to remaining bays, that to centre with corbelled stack in crowstepped gable, that to right with timber-pedimented finialled dormer. Single storey wing to outer right with small bipartite to left and further window to right.

SE (GALVELMORE STREET) ELEVATION: 4-bay elevation with regular fenestration to ground and 1st floor, bay to right with stone jettied gablehead to attic with small window, 3 timber dormers (as above) to left.

4-pane and plate glass glazing patterns in timber sash and case windows. Grey slates. Coped ashlar stacks with cans; ashlar-coped skews and beak skewputts.

INTERIOR: modern banking hall retaining some decorative cornices and screen door.

FORMER BANK HOUSE: 2-storey and attic, 2-bay crowstepped house with dividing course and roll-moulded doorpiece.

SE (GALVELMORE STREET) ELEVATION: broad gabled bay to left with cash machine below altered from window, further window above and small window in gablehead. Slightly set-back, narrow bay to right with steps up to deep-set panelled timber door and plate glass fanlight, window above giving way to crowstepped pediment. Later harled bay set-back to outer left.

4-pane and plate glass glazing patterns in timber sash and case windows. Grey slates. Coped ashlar stack with full complement of polygonal cans; ashlar-coped skews and beak skewputts.

BOUNDARY WALLS: semicircular-coped rubble boundary walls.

Statement of Interest

The building was originally the Central Bank which merged with the Bank of Scotland in 1868. Korner's route from High Street to Burrell Square took him "between the Lodge and Central Bank Branch".
