Description

Circa 1920. Celtic Cross First World War Memorial. Red sandstone. Carved inscription to battered plinth surmounted by reduced band relief carved '1914' '1918' and giving way to cross richly carved with interlaced patterns, pierced wheel and centre flower.

GATEPIERS, GATES AND BOUNDARY WALLS: square-section ashlar gatepiers with mitre coping, decorative ironwork gates and saddleback-coped stepped boundary walls with inset decorative cast-iron railings.

Statement of Interest

A modern church now stands on the site of the 1875 St Columba's Episcopal Church which was designed by R Ewan of Glasgow in the 'Decorated style' with an 1892 tower, it was demolished in 1986.
