Description

Probably 19th century. Circular-plan rubble cairns (54) surmounted by single stone, flanking A828 to W of Druimavuic. 2 pairs with decorative pebble caps form gatepiers to Druimavuic Ballieveolon House at N and W.

Statement of Interest

The 54 cairns include 4 which form gatepiers. They were probably constructed from field boulders as part of an estate employment scheme. It is thought that their purpose was to make the edge of the road, which is prone to flooding. Although the date of the cairns is uncertain, they are associated with the nearby 18th century Druimavuic Ballieveolon House and may date to works on the policies of this property in the 19th century. The house is listed separately. The cairns are aligned in an arc, following the bend in the road. They form an interesting feature in the landscape. Unsubstantiated local stories purport that the cairns were used to mark, or hide the burial sites of the Government's red coat soldiers. The cairns, probably as a result of their size, do not feature on the Ordnance Survey 1st or 2nd Edition maps.
