Description

Mid 19th century. 3-storey, 7-bay, rectangular-plan classical, corner tenement block with shops to ground. Slightly recessed, bowed corner bay. Painted yellow ashlar sandstone. Dividing band between ground and 1st floor, eaves course and projecting cornice. Moulded architrave to windows, projecting moulded cornices to 1st floor, projecting cills to 2nd storey.

W (PRINCIPAL) ELEVATION: 7-bay, regular fenestration, bowed bay to outer left.

E (REAR) ELEVATION: irregular fenestration, partially obscured by abutting buildings.

N (HALLCRAIG STREET) ELEVATION: 3-bay, regular fenestration.

S (SIDE) ELEVATION: obscured by abutting building.

6-pane upper, plate glass lower sashes. Low, hipped roof, grey slates, lead flashing.

INTERIOR: modern shop fittings to ground, gutted store rooms to 1st floor, 2nd floor not seen 2001.

Statement of Interest

Despite the modern shop fronts to the ground floor this corner block provides an important architectural component of the town centre cross, linking Bank St, Anderson St and Hallcraig St.
