James Thomson, circa 1880. 2-storey, 3-bay, square-plan, symmetrical Italianate villa. Broad projecting, consoled eaves to hipped roof. Squared and snecked yellow sandstone rubble courses with ashlar margins. Long and short channelled quoins, base course, continuous cill course to 1st and 2nd storey windows, impost course to upper storey semicircular-arched windows. Coped wallhead stacks with scalloped frieze.
SE (PRINCIPAL) ELEVATION: slightly advanced porch to centre, channelled ashlar surround, projecting cornice with block and baluster parapet above. Projecting flanking canted windows to ground, fretted parapets. Single semicircular-arched window to centre of 2nd storey flanked by stone mullioned semicircular-arched bipartite windows.
NW (REAR) ELEVATION: square-headed windows to ground and 1st floor outer bays, large semicircular-arched stair window to centre. Wallhead stack to centre right.
SW (SIDE) ELEVATION: square-headed bipartite window to ground floor left, single window to right. Semicircular-arched window to upper storey left, semicircular arched window to centre, single square-headed window to right. Wallhead stack to centre.
NE (SIDE) ELEVATION: square-headed windows to ground floor left and upper storey right. Single storey, service wing abutting to outer right: piended roof, square windows and doors.
Plate glass timber sash and case windows. Grey slates, lead flashing. Cast-iron rainwater goods.
INTERIOR: heavily moulded classical cornices throughout including acanthus, palmettes, dentil moulding. Timber panelled doors.
Built to replace the original Airdrie Provost's house, facing south across what was once the Provost's orchard. This otherwise typical pattern book villa is distinguished by an abundance of architectural detail to both the exterior and interior and for its historic orchard site close to the town centre away from the principal suburban villa areas of Airdrie. The former Royal Bank of Scotland building on Bank Street is also by Thomson (see separate listing).
