Description

Alexander Proudfoot, 1924. Stepped 3-stage, rectangular-plan sandstone ashlar war memorial with statue of winged figure supporting dying man.

Simple base with concave-moulded top giving way to reduced battered 2nd stage with bronze plaques bearing Roll of Honour and worded:

IN EVELASTING REMEMBRANCE OF THE MEN OF FROM THIS DISTRICT WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE GREAT WAR 1914-1918 and THOSE WHO MADE THE SUPREME SACRIFICE IN THE SECOND WORLD WAR 1939-1945

Decorative dark band near top of 2nd stage giving way to bronze winged and draped figure holding in its arms dying man clad only in loincloth (see below).

Statement of Interest

The winged figure represents "the national consciousness of the sacrifice made by the country's youth, symbolised by the stricken figure in its arms" (McKinlay & Hamilton).
