Description

1897, relocated to present site 1973. Pink and grey marble horse trough. Rectangular basin on shaped plinth inscribed 'UNDER THE AUSPICES OF GLASGOW AND W OF SCOT SPCA 1897' with moulded splash panel over inscribed 'CA CANNY' and additional metal plaque recording relocation (see Notes).

Statement of Interest

Originally sited at Canniesburn Toll, the horse trough was removed to this site by the former Bearsden Town Council. Provision of drinking troughs and fountains grew more generally as a municipal responsibility in the late 19th century, and was mirrored in rural areas by loacl lairds, or as here by animal welfare activists.
