Description

Circa 1900. 3-storey, classically-detailed tenement with public house and shops at ground, commercial premises at 1st floor, with bowed corner elevation. Polished ashlar. Base course, ground floor cornice, 1st and 2nd floor cill courses, eaves cornice and blocking course. Architraved windows, those at 1st floor with consoled cornices; stone mullions.

E (VICAR STREET) ELEVATION: bay to left of centre at ground with broad 2-leaf panelled timber door, deep blocked fanlight and fixed display window over panelled apron to right, all under fascia with paired brackets to left. Bays beyond to left forming corner elevation (see below). Shop to right with deep modern fascia, 2 display windows to left, in-canted door and further window to right. 1st and 2nd floors each with single window in bay to left of centre flanked by bipartite windows, further bipartite window to outer right.

SE (CORNER) ELEVATION: 5 public house display windows (as above) canted around corner at ground with narrow rounded fascia and cornice giving way to 1st floor with bowed wide-centre tripartite, single window to right and 2 windows to left all under linked cornice, similar fenestration to 2nd floor.

S (MELVILLE STREET) ELEVATION: bay to right with display window at ground and bipartite to each floor above. 2 bays (above ground) to left with 2 display windows to right and 2 doors to left, bipartite window to

right and single window to left at each floor above (those to 1st floor not corniced).

Plate glass glazing (some etched, see Interior) in timber sash and case windows to 1st floor (except outer right at E), 2nd floor SE bowed centre bay and 2 bays to left at S. Sash and case windows to 1st floor E etched with animals, birds and fountain in Art Deco style. Grey slates. Coped ashlar stacks with full-complement of polygonal cans to S.

INTERIOR: Firkin's Bar with good original decorative scheme in place including 2-leaf, glazed doors to Melville Street entrance vestibule with etched glass, fine panelled vestibule to Vicar Street entrance with part-glazing and coloured glass clerestorey, decorative plasterwork cornices and frieze; mosaic tiled floors; screens; timber panelled bar and gantry; tiled dado; fluted cast-iron columns. Common stair for 3 Melville Street with decorative cast-iron balusters. Decorative etched glass to windows visible at 1st floor to Vicar Street.
