1832; small stone memorial to cholera victims cordoned off with low, single railing; small stone piers with diamond carvings. Plinth; string course; square shaft with memorial plaque; cushion cap.

Statement of Interest

B Group with Howard Park Gates, Dr Marshall Monument, Old Men's Hut and Park Keeper's House. The plaque reads: 'Sacred - to the memory of those inhabitants who died from cholera during the epidemic of 1832 and are here interred'. 250 victims of the cholera epidemic were buried in this mass grave because the common burying ground was thought to be too small and the authorities also believed it might minimise further risk of infection. The choice of the park was probably favoured because a temporary hospital had been erected in the park to cope with the sick and thus the journey from hospital to grave was quick, helping to prevent infection.
