Description

18th century; later 19th and 20th century alterations. 2-storey and attic, 3-bay, L-plan house. Pebble-dash; ashlar surrounds to windows and door; ashlar eaves course.

S (PRINCIPAL) ELEVATION: door to far right; pedimented and pilastered doorpiece. Flanlight to door. Window to left flank. 2-storey fenestration bay to left; canted bay windows; chamfered surrounds. Pedimented 1st floor window centred above door. Later 20th century, single storey garage attached to W elevation.

W ELEVATION: plain gable wall. Later 20th century garage abuts garden wall.

N ELEVATION: 2-storey wing to left and 20th century lean-to.

E ELEVATION: attached to Caldervale.

Plate glass timber sash and case windows. 20th century roof lights to rear. Timber panelled door. Pitched slate roof; skewputts. Coped gable apex stacks; polygonal cans; coped gable apex stack to rear 2-storey wing. Piended slate roof to bay window. Asphalt lean-to roof to modern N room.

INTERIOR: step leads into small inner hall; glazed panel door. Minton tiles to ground floor lobby. Dogleg staircase; decorative timber newel post and cast-iron balusters. Timber handrail. Egg and dart cornice to 1st floor hall. Arch to E of stairs leads to attic. Blocked door to adjacent house (Caldervale) in cupboard beside arch. Glazed, 2-leaf door (former rear door) at 1st floor leads into modern rear room.

GARDEN WALLS

Tall rubble wall to rear encloses garden on 3 sides. Low stugged wall; ashlar coping to front; terminating gatepost to W; chamfered ashlar square-plan pier, conical coping stone. Cast-iron gate; railings on wall now missing (2001).

Statement of Interest

The Victorian appearance of Undercliff belies its earlier origins. The 1st floor W room has a cornice decorated with a rose, shamrock and thistle (now hidden by a false ceiling). The internal communication between this and the adjoining Caldervale is interesting. This is a feature which is seen in other houses in Culross, for example, Low Causeway, Pear Tree Cottage and House (J Laing). For brief history of Culross Burgh see Culross, The Cross, The Study.
