Description

Dated 1897, incorporating 17th century foundations. Two-storey to High Street, three-storey to rear with basement, rectangular-plan. Squared and tooled sandstone. East (Principal) Elevation: 3-bay timber and plate glass shop front to ground with recessed entrance; broad signage fascia above; timber panelled door to outer right, fanlight, narrow pilasters terminating in large fluted consoles, also to outer left. Two wallhead dormers breaking eaves to upper storey; barge boarded gables, stone mullioned bipartite windows. Plate glass, timber frame, and sash and case windows. Cast-iron bracket to centre over date stone inscribed, 'AC [?] 1897'. Bracket street light to outer right wallhead. Gable ends obscured by abutting buildings. Grey slates, lead flashing. Cast-iron rainwater goods. W (REAR) ELEVATION: three-storey tenement appearance with irregular fenestration, on steeply sloping site with vaulted rubble basement/foundations. INTERIORS: open-plan shop at No 27 with floating ceiling. Tenement (No 29) not seen 2001. Basement: Mid 17th century, barrel-vaulted chamber with rubble walls approximately 1 metre thick, part of an earlier building or range of buildings on the same site. West wall of basement has a small chamfered window with a metal grille.

Statement of Interest

A well maintained typical 19th century burgh tenement and shop, particularly noteworthy for its vaulted basement and Edwardian plate glass shop front. (Minor updates to description, 2023).
