Description

Mid 19th century. 2-storey, 3-bay, symmetrical, rectangular-plan, gabled, terraced town house. Harled, probably random rubble with squared blocks to quoins and margins. Plain, chamfered margins projecting cills to windows.

E (PRINCIPAL) ELEVATION: regular fenestration, timber-panelled door to centre, fanlight. Large, canted dormers with piended roofs.

W (REAR) ELEVATION: not seen 2001.

N (SIDE) ELEVATION: obscured by abutting building.

S (SIDE) ELEVATION: obscured by abutting building.

12-pane, timber frame, sash and case windows. Grey slates, lead flashing. Coped gable stacks to N. Cast-iron rainwater goods.

INTERIOR: not seen 2001.

Statement of Interest

Perhaps the best preserved and maintained house of its type in Ramoyle, typifying the burgh architecture of this area of Dunblane. Ramoyle stood originally as a small separate community outside the town walls but by the 18th century building had consolidated along the road now known simply as Ramoyle, providing the road north out of the town towards Perth. Ramoyle is considered to be the oldest part of Dunblane with many of the houses, of plain burgh architecture, dating to the 18th and early 19th centuries although most were extended or rebuilt in the later 19th century. Ramoyle was primarily a weavers' community as can be seen in several of the cottages with large bipartite windows. Continuous evolution and modification of the houses in Ramoyle has lead to many being altered substantially from their 19th century form, primarily modern glazing and doors, and as such only a few examples of the best preserved have been listed. However, the importance of the historic fabric of the Ramoyle houses as a whole is recognised through their inclusion in the Dunblane Conservation Area.
