Description

Circa 1880 with adjacent lodge and remodelling of house. Entrance gateway with obelisk-finialled piers at centre and swept wing walls. Sandstone ashlar piers flanking entrance (those at termination of wing walls droved); coursed decoratively tooled sandstone wing walls with ashlar coping. Pair of rectangular-plan gatepiers at centre (gates missing); each with base course, frieze and cornice and attached piers to outer (E) and inner (W) faces; rounded coping surmounted by obelisk finial. V-shaped coping to wing walls, flattened at apex and surmounted by decorative cast-iron railings (section missing to N side) incorporating trefoil finials and bands of cusped motifs. Wings terminate at chamfered square-plan piers, rising to octagonal-plan above; each with base course, frieze, cornice and octagonal pyramid coping.

Statement of Interest

A distinctive late Victorian entrance gateway. It first appears on the 1898 OS map, together with the adjacent lodge (not listed on account of extensive alterations). The original Aucheneck House was built in around 1855 and extended/remodelled in around 1880 by John Wilson, who purchased the estate in 1869.
