Description

Earlier 20th century. Single storey and attic; overall square-plan; LODGE; with pavilion roof, swept at eaves, dormers with shaped ashlar gables to attic and circular-plan tower feature at W angle. Harled with sandstone ashlar dressings. Overhanging eaves. Main arrises rounded slightly at ground floor (corbelled out slightly above). Pair of octagonal-plan sandstone ashlar gatepiers to ENTRANCE GATEWAY to NW.

LODGE: NW (PRINCIPAL) ELEVATION: entrance with moulded corniced architrave with inner roll-moulding to right; boarded timber door with strap hinges. Window to left; dormer to left of attic. Rounded projecting bay to outer right; rising to conical-roofed circular-plan tower just above eaves; small window to left of ground floor; small window to right of attic (for further window see SW elevation).

NE ELEVATION: window to right of ground floor; small window to left. Dormer to right of attic.

SW ELEVATION: window to right of ground floor. Dormer above. Rounded projecting bay to outer left; rising to conical-roofed circular-plan tower just above eaves; small window to right of ground floor (for other windows see NW elevation).

SE ELEVATION: entrance with glazed timber door to right of centre; window to right (both probably inserted). Window to left; dormer to left of attic. Small single storey piended-roofed addition with window to outer right.

Mainly 9 and 12-pane timber sash and case windows (those to ground floor have curved bars across the outside). Grey slate pavilion roof. Large rendered coped stack at apex of roof; one round can remaining.

ENTRANCE GATEWAY: pair of octagonal-plan ashlar gatepiers with friezes, cornices and stepped coping. Replacement steel gate.

Statement of Interest

B-Group with Balfunning House, Former Stable Block and E Lodge and Entranceway. An attractive earlier 20th century entrance lodge with a distinctive tower feature at its W angle. The former W entrance was further to E; this lodge and gateway being erected when the line of the road was changed slightly, which is said to have been in the 1920's. The original W entrance can be seen on the 1918 OS map and the change in the line of the road (together with the lodge and entranceway) can clearly be seen on the 1965 OS map.
