Description

Alexander Russell, Kirkcaldy, 1824. Shouldered and slightly bowed cast-iron milestone set into ground and attached to stone wall at rear, adjacent to former ferry terminal building. Approximately 3' high, 2' in breadth, 4" deep. Dated and inscribed 'Alexr Russell Kirkcaldy Foundry 1824' at the top; inscribed in flowing script on S face 'To Pettycur 33, New Inn 20, Cupar 11, Newport 0'. Painted white with raised black lettering and margins

Statement of Interest

A-Group with Newport Ferry Pier, Former Ferry Terminal and 2-14 Boat Brae. The milestone shows distances in miles and was an indicator for passengers disembarking from the boat. The adjacent pier at Newport, which was improved by Thomas Telford in 1823, operated a busy ferry service to Dundee (see separate Listing for Newport Ferry Pier).

This milestone notes Pettycur, which was also a ferry port and the staging post of New Inn. A similar milestone can be found near to Newport, on the Cupar Road.
