Description

Circa 1880 incorporating earlier fabric to rear. 2-storey (3-storey to rear), triangular plan, 9-bay public house built on sloping ground. Scots Baronial detailing with finialled fish-scale-slated circular tower to S corner. Random rubble, rendered and painted to SE elevation. Segmental- and triangular-headed dormers to 1st floor.

SE (PRINCIPAL) ELEVATION: ground floor bays divided by pilasters supporting freize and cornice. Irregular fenestration to ground; . 2-leaf timber panelled door and single timber panelled door. Decorative dormers breaking eaves, that to right based on one at Maybole Castle, Ayrshire (see Notes). Central dormer-head containing decorative device of roses and Holyrood stag's head. Crowstepped gable adjoining tower to outer left; corbelled out crenellated feature with gun loop.

TOWER: corbelled out from 1st floor. 3 windows; cill course. Panelled band with rosettes above ball mouldings and below eaves.

W ELEVATION: 3 storeys; mainly older fabric. Irregularly fenestrated. 3 triangular- and segmental-headed dormers breaking eaves.

N ELEVATION: crowstepped M-gable. Irregularly fenestrated

Graded grey slate. Chamfered corniced stack to S and plain wall-head stack to N. Some small-pane glazing to ground; mixture of non-traditional and timber sash and case windows elsewhere.

RETAINING WALLS, STEPS RAILINGS AND GATE: flight of 7 stone steps, random rubble boundary wall and gate pier with ball and finial cast-iron gate to NE. 2 flights of stone steps to S; random rubble retaining walls with shaped skews surmounted by ball and finial railings.
