Description

Dated 1913. 2-storey and attic, 8-bay Scots baronial style police station. Red bull-faced rubble with polished ashlar dressings. Moulded string course. Corniced doors. Crowsteps; corbels; raked cills, stone mullions and chamfered arrises.

NE (PRINCIPAL) ELEVATION: stepped elevation with projecting crenellated tower-like entrance bay to left of centre, incorporating moulded doorpiece with broad panelled timber door, deep plate glass fanlight and attached 'POLICE' sign, single window above at 1st floor giving way to carved panel with 'POLICE STATION' breaking into deep crenellation. Regular fenestration to flanking set-back bays and to crowstepped gable at outer left with corbel to outer left angle, and stepped corbel course to jettied gablehead with arrowslit. Bays to right of centre also regularly fenestrated but with corniced door in penultimate bay to right and bipartite window to outer right at ground; crowstepped gables to outer right and left, that to right jettied above 1st floor and with arrowslit in gablehead, that to left with relief carved 'CPC' in panel giving way to gablehead stack.

NW (THE CROFT) ELEVATION: broad crowstepped gable to centre with 2 windows to each floor and weathered datestone in gablehead with dominant stack; bipartite window to outer right at ground and single window above, single storey piend-roofed bay with small window to outer right and boundary wall abutting beyond. Blank bay to outer left.

SE ELEVATION: blank crowstepped gable.

SW (REAR) ELEVATION: variety of elements to asymmetrically fenestrated rear elevation including outer gables with projecting single storey wings, that to right (cell wing) with small domed ridge ventilator.

4-pane and plate glass glazing patterns in timber sash and case windows. Grey slates. Coped ashlar and bull-faced stacks with cans; ashlar-coped skews with block skewputts; cast-iron downpipes and fine decorative rainwater hoppers with gargoyle-like animal heads.

INTERIOR: moulded cornices; boarded reveals; timber doors; timber-balustered dog-leg staircase.

BOUNDARY WALLS, GATEPIERS AND RAILINGS: low saddleback-coped squared rubble boundary walls with inset ironwork railings and mitre-coped square-section ashlar gatepiers to NE; coped boundary walls and pyramidally-coped square-section ashlar gatepiers to SW.

Statement of Interest

Formerly with sergeants and constables houses (as flats) to bays at NW, these were incorporated into station offices during 1986 internal alterations. Blairgowrie had its own private police force prior to CPC, and this area was a warren of slum housing avoided by the police before clearance and erection of this new police station.
