Later to late 19th century. 3-storey and cellar, 3-bay small tenement with shop at ground retaining fine traditional interior, in irregular terrace. Narrow bands of stugged squared rubble with ashlar dressings, harled with stone cills to rear. Ground floor frieze and cornice, 2nd floor cill course and eaves course. Architraved windows to SE.
SE (HIGH STREET) ELEVATION: symmetrical. Panelled timber door with plate glass fanlight and flanking stop-chamfered pilasters to centre at ground, this flanked by further doors (that to right part glazed panelled timber, that to left converted to fixed display window, both with plate glass fanlights) with narrow pilasters beyond; outer bays each with fixed display window, full-width toplight and outer ashlar piers. 3 windows to each floor above and large kilted figure between bays 1 and 2 at 1st floor.
NW (REAR) ELEVATION: variety of elements to asymmetrically-fenestrated elevation including stair window to centre.
Plate glass glazing pattern in timber sash and case windows to NW; modern timber windows to SE; coloured margins to stair window. Grey slates. Ashlar stack raised in brick, with cans; square-section cast-iron downpipe with rainwater hopper.
INTERIOR: shop at No 39 with good decorative scheme in place including boarded timber walls, original fitments and interior glazing to display window; basement with full-width part-glazed timber shutters on chain pulleys. Winding cantilevered staircase with decorative cast-iron balusters; middle flat with decorative plasterwork cornicing.
BOUNDARY WALL: semicircular-coped rubble boundary wall to rear.
The shops have been joined and run as a family business since 1979, No 43 was formerly a corsetry shop.
