Description

Earlier 19th century. 2-storey with attic and cellar, 3-bay, L-plan house. Squared and snecked red sandstone rubble with raised ashlar margins and quoin strips. Base course.

W (PRINCIPAL) ELEVATION: symmetrical. Centre bay with corniced, pilastered doorpiece and deep-set panelled timber door with plate glass fanlight etched with 'Woodville'; windows in flanking bays and regular fenestration close to eaves at 1st floor; polygonal-roofed canted dormer windows over outer bays.

S ELEVATION: gabled bay to left of centre with door to right and window to left at ground, attic window in gablehead. Slightly set-back lower bay to right with window to each floor.

E (REAR) ELEVATION: advanced gable to left, abutting boundary wall, with small window on return to right at ground; set-back face to right with small window to low flat-roofed extension in re-entrant angle, stair window to left above and single window to right.

N ELEVATION: gabled elevation with small attic window in gablehead.

4-, 8- and 12-pane glazing patterns in timber sash and case windows. Grey slates. Coped ashlar stacks with cans; narrow bargeboards.

INTERIOR: some moulded cornices and working timber shutters; panelled timber doors and architraves; winding staircase and landing with decorative cast-iron balusters. Timber fireplaces to 1st floor and attic, some with cast-iron grates and tiled cheeks.

BOUNDARY WALLS, GATEPIERS AND RAILINGS: semicircular-coped rubble boundary walls with large fireplace and semicircular oven set into wall at NE angle. Low saddleback-coped rubble boundary walls with inset railings and gate; flat-coped square-plan ashlar gatepiers.

Statement of Interest

Woodville is thought to have been built as a wedding present for the Proctor family, by 1881 it was occupied by a jute manufacturer named Baxter. It is a fine example of a traditional earlier 19th century domestic property of middling size.
