Robert Reid and William Sibbald, 1812. 4-storey and basement, 7-bay terraced tenement. Broached ashlar sandstone; V-jointed rustication at principal floor. Band course at principal and 1st floors; cill course at 1st floor; projecting cills to windows at 2nd floor; continual cornice at 2nd floor; cornice and blocking course at 3rd floor. Ashlar steps and entrance platts oversailing basement.
E (PRINCIPAL) ELEVATION: 9-panel timber common stair door centred at principal floor, with blind rectangular fanlight, flanked by timber doors, 6-panel to right, 9-panel to left, with plate glass rectangular fanlights. Windows in remaining bays at principal floor; regular fenestration to floors above, and to basement. Flagged basement area.
N ELEVATION: adjoining terrace, see separate listing (21-34 Abercromby Place).
S ELEVATION: adjoining terrace, see separate lasting (10-14, even Nos, Nelson Street).
Predominantly 12-pane timber sash and case windows. Balconies spanning 3 bays to outer left and outer right, at 3rd floor. Grey slate M-roof. Cast-iron rainwater goods. Random rubble ridge stacks with broached ashlar quoins, rendered shouldered gablehead stack; coped, with circular cans.
INTERIORS: not seen, 1997, but some evidence of working panelled shutters.
RAILINGS AND LAMP: ashlar copes surmounted by iron railings with balusters and finials. Cast-iron railing-mounted lamp with glass globe.
Part of the Second New Town A Group, a significant surviving part of one of the most important and best preserved examples of urban planning in Britain.
Nelson Street was part of the first extension of the New Town planned by Reid and Sibbald in 1802. Building began in 1812.
