Description

Robert Rowand Anderson, 1880. 2-storey L-plan steep-roofed Gothic house with conical-roofed circular stair tower in re-entrant angle. Long and short quoins. Mullioned and transomed windows. Coursed, rock-faced sandstone with polished dressings.

N (PRINCIPAL) ELEVATION: advanced gabled bay to right with 2-leaf timber panelled door in roll-moulded, shouldered surround, flanked by chamfered pilasters; carved panel with bee and oak leaves above; ballflower frieze beneath cill of window above; bipartite cusped, leaded windows lighting stair with quatrefoil above

in crocketed pediment. Tripartite windows to ground and 1st floors to left, those to ground transomed and set beneath relieving arches. Narrow windows to circular stair tower. 3-storey wing of L-plan to outer left, with faux buttress to ground and barge-boarded dormer to attic floor. Later single storey piend-roofed extension adjoining.

SOUTH (GARDEN) ELEVATION: advanced gabled bay to right with 2-storey canted window. 3 bays to left: to right, 2-leaf glazed door with mullioned fanlight and relieving arch above; steeply pedimented dormer breaking eaves to 1st floor; mullioned and transomed tripartite windows to ground and 1st floors, those above with barge-boarded dormerheads.

E ELEVATION: later single storey piend-roofed extension to right. Advanced gabled bay to left. Barge-boarded dormer to attic.

Predominantly border glazed windows, with some small-pane

leaded glass. Red tiles to roof with decorative terracotta ridge tiles. Tall corniced ashlar stacks with tall cylindrical cans. Stone skews. Cast iron rainwater goods.

Statement of Interest

Now the Junior School Headmaster?s house, Malcolm House was built as a sanatorium. RB Malcolm had been the school doctor.
