Description

Later 19th century, Smith and Hawkes foundry (Birmingham). Wall mounted letter box set into rubble wall of 29 Dean Path (see separate listing). Cast-iron, painted Post Office red. Standard design rectangular letter box with flap to top and embossed crown and initials VR above. Raised fielded panel below with integrated handle and keyhole.

Statement of Interest

This letter box is prominently situated on the main thoroughfare through the picturesque Dean Village. The box is sited in the rubble wall of the front elevation of 29 Dean Path (see separate listing), and is prominent in the view up the street from the centre of the village. The letter box forms an important part of the wider fabric of the core of the historic former Dean Village.

This particular design of wall mounted post box is likely to date from the later 19th century, when boxes to this design were produced in three different sizes (types A, B, C) by the Smith and Hawkes Foundry of Birmingham. Wall mounted boxes had first come into use in 1857.
