Description

Probably late 18th century. Rectangular coped sandstone rubble walls; late 19th century cottage with later additions built in to brick wall (formerly heated wall, see Notes). Arched opening to W. Single storey and attic cottage with bipartite (late 20th century) windows to ground; bracketed eaves; grey slates and ridge stacks.

Statement of Interest

The garden originally served Caldwell House (separately listed), built for Baron Mure of Caldwell by Robert and James Adam in 1771-73. The garden had heated walls, brick walls with built-in heating pipes, designed to support the growth of exotic fruit. These are no longer intact however. The walled garden consists of two adjoining rectangular enclosures, presumably for different types of produce. The listing primarily recognises the walled garden and the late 19th century gardener?s cottage, although extended, is included in the listing as it adjoins the walled garden.
