Description

Probably early 19th century. Square-section, panelled pier on plinth; cornice and pedimented cap; cast-iron pump handle. Polished sandstone ashlar with droved detailing.

Statement of Interest

In its original position, situated in the policies of Caldwell House (separately listed), this is an unusual and rare survival of a classical water pump. The house, designed by Robert and James Adam, dates from 1773 however the pump is most likely later and displays a more Regency style of classicism with its panelled decoration and bold pedimented cap. The iron handle still swings though some of the internal fitting are missing, as is the spout.
