Description

Dated 1879; converted to flats late 20th century. 2-storey, 3-bay, piend-roofed villa with principal elevation. Stugged squared and snecked sandstone rubble with some Aberdeen bond and ashlar dressings; harled to rear. Deep base course and blocking course; jettied string and eaves courses, latter forming solid hoodmould to S stepped at centre with dated raised centre section. Hoodmould with label stops; roll-moulded architraved openings; raked cills. Windows to S, W and N all large.

S (PRINCIPAL) ELEVATION: symmetrical. Window to centre at ground with bipartite windows in flanking bays and chamfered outer angles corbelled to square at string course; single window to centre at 1st floor flanked by slightly smaller windows.

W (ENTRANCE) ELEVATION: 2 regularly-fenestrated bays projecting at left with chamfered and corbelled angle to right giving way to right return with steps up to 6-panelled timber door, blocked fanlight and decorative hoodmould with label stops below single window at 1st floor; further window to each floor of recessed face at right.

E ELEVATION: regularly-fenestrated, 3-bay elevation.

N (REAR) ELEVATION: asymmetrically-fenestrated elevation extended to left.

4-pane glazing pattern in timber sash and case windows. Grey slates. Coped and shouldered ashlar wallhead stack with tall can. Ironwork balconettes to some 1st floor windows.

INTERIOR: late 20th century, retaining cantilevered stone staircase with decorative cast-iron barleytwist balusters and timber handrail.

Statement of Interest

Formerly offices of the Bo'Ness Co-operative Society with civil wedding ceremonies held in the principal first floor room. Also used as meeting rooms for the Women's Guild and local men's groups.
