Probably James Thomson, circa 1900. 3-storey, 2-bay flatted dwelling with shops at ground, in irregular terrace. Ashlar. Ground floor entablature with cornice forming 1st floor cill course, 1st floor cornice, 2nd floor cill course and eaves cornice. Architraved windows above ground. Stone mullions.
S (PRINCIPAL) ELEVATION: 2 shops at ground each with outer banded pilaster with fluted capital, modern door to centre and retaining traditional form of 2-part fixed display window, that to left also with decoratively-astragalled top-lights. Each floor above with slightly advanced bays forming vertically-emphasised panels; 1st floor with tripartite windows below narrow panelled decorative windowheads and flanking pilasters; 2nd floor reduced to bipartite windows each breaking eaves into raised blocking course and with flanking and mullion pilasters, further flanked by full-height scrollwork detail.
Plate glass glazing in timber sash and case windows. Grey slates. Coped ashlar stacks. Square-section downpipes with decorative fixings.
Group with Nos 43-45 and 47-49 South Street. Similarities with Nos 35-41 South Street suggest authorship by local architect James Thomson is probable. Distinguished by unusual treatment of 2nd floor windows.
