Description

James Thomson, 1903. 3-storey, 3-bay flatted dwelling with shops at ground, closing irregular terrace. Narrow bands of stugged ashlar with polished quoins and dressings. Ground floor and eaves cornices. Architraved windows in vertical panels above ground, bracketted to 1st floor. Stone mullions.

S (PRINCIPAL) ELEVATION: symmetrical above ground. 3 traditionally-detailed shopfronts at ground, each with in-canted part-glazed timber door and deep plate glass fanlight to right and fixed display window to left, plain dividing pilasters and frieze/fascia; centre shop also with mosaic-tiled doorstep. Single pedimented window to centre bay at 1st floor with bipartite windows to flanking bays; 2nd floor similarly-fenestrated with tall shouldered wallhead stack to centre.

Plate glass glazing in replacement timber sash and case windows. Grey slates. Coped ashlar stack with can and ashlar-coped skews. Square-section cast-iron downpipe.

Statement of Interest

Group with Nos 35-41 and 43-45 South Street. Built for Miss Melville. Strong resemblance to Anderson Building at Nos 23-29. Local architect James Thomson designed a number of tenements in South Street as well as the Post Office at East Pier Street.
