Description

Probably Charles S S Johnston, 1897 (dated). Single storey village hall with Baronial details; double pile with pitched roofs; crowstepped gables with ball finials. 3 bays to Main Street with tripartite stone mullioned and transomed windows, string course above; entrance bay to R with timber door in Tudor arch, plaque above inscribed 'IRP 19th December 1873, 19th January 1893, Erected 1897' (see Notes). Small lean-to single bays to E and W. Squared and snecked blonde sandstone; dressed margins.

N (REAR) ELEVATION: 4 bays. 4-light mullioned and transomed window to centre L gabled bay; flanking bipartite windows; small window to outer R.

Non-traditional UPVC windows replacing timber sash and case plate glass windows. Graded grey slates; cast-iron rainwater goods.

INTERIOR: little of interest. Carved timber Renaissance style plaque with religious inscription.

Statement of Interest

Built in memory of Isobel Ralston Patrick who died aged nineteen in 1893. Charles S S Johnston remodelled Woodside House circa 1895 for the Cochran-Patricks and it is likely he was commissioned by the Patrick family to build the hall shortly afterwards. The hall is a locally important building in Gateside, located on the Main Street at the east end of this small rural village. Unfortunately, the traditional sash and case windows were recently replaced with out-of-character uPVC versions but the rest of the building remains unaltered. The hall is the only building of its style and type in Gateside, where the majority of the buildings are small tenements or cottages in the vernacular style. The village has also several new-build properties of non-descript form.
