Description

1878, Single span bridge of wrought iron transverse and longitudinal girders.

Square-profile cast iron baluster panels with diamond pattern to top and bottom. Moulded octagonal cast iron pillars at terminals. Squat, square sandstone terminals with chamfered capstones (missing on SW corner) and cart stones. Abutments of rock-faced sandstone ashlar and wing walls of squared rubble with semicircular capstones.

Statement of Interest

This bridge is all that remains of Paton and Baldwin's mill in Clackmannan and is thus an important survival. Recent photos show a plaque attached to the bridge (since removed) which gave the manufacturers and date as P and W MacLellan, Clutha Ironworks, Glasgow 1878. The MacLellans were well-known bridge builders
