Description

Dated 1875. Single storey gabled school building with integral schoolhouse to R, with Gothic and Baronial details. Predominantly stone mullioned and transomed windows, shouldered and stop-chamfered openings. Base course; squared and snecked stugged yellow sandstone; stringcourse (schoolhouse only); bracketed over-hanging eaves.

W (PRINCIPAL) ELEVATION: recessed entrance range; door to centre R in roll-moulded surround; tripartite window to R, tripartite to L flanked by bipartites. Gabled bay to L with tripartite and blocked oculus

within stopped, pointed arch. Schoolhouse with pentice-roofed canted bay to ground L; bipartite to gabled bay above; pentice-roofed entrance with gargoyle in rentrant angle to R.

E (REAR) ELEVATION: 4 advanced irregular gabled bays; that to centre R later with tall square brick chimney.

N ELEVATION: gabled bay to centre R with tripartite and blocked oculus within stopped pointed arch; 3 bays to L, door to centre.

S ELEVATION: 3 bipartites to L gable; single storey 2-bay block to R.

Some original timber sash and case plate glass windows; some uPVC glazing. Grey slates; cast-iron rainwater goods with decorative hoppers.

INTERIOR: part seen (2004). Modernised.

Statement of Interest

Although typically modest for a rural school, this example is well detailed and may be the work of a prominent local architect, such as J & R S Ingram of Kilmarnock. Although some windows have been replaced with uPVC glazing, many original timber sash and case windows survive. The former school is located at the edge of Crookedholm, overlooking the village and surrounded by open fields, contributing significantly to the local scene.
