Description

Later 16th century; 19th century additions. Fragment of coped and stepped random rubble boundary wall (approximately 35 metres long) incorporating early fabric of early town wall (seen at lower level). Carved marriage lintel "W B 1618 I B" incorporated into 19th century repairs to upper two thirds.

Statement of Interest

This small section of medieval town wall is the only fragment remaining in Inverkeithing. Stone walls were built around Inverkeithing following a mandate to further fortify the burgh with dykes, ditches and catapults in 1557. These later 16th century defences were an improvement over the simple ditches and wooden palisade of earlier years. However stone ports had already replaced earlier wooden ones in 1503. The marriage lintel marks the initials of William Blackburn and Janet Bairdie and formally surmounted a doorway possibly located to the west of the current wall providing access to an early house at 85 High Street (demolished).
