Description

Circa 1865-70, Crofthead and Kilmarnock Extension Railway. 4-arch viaduct over Stewarton Road and Glazert Burn. Squared, coursed, bull-faced sandstone; droved sandstone ashlar to arch soffits. 2 band courses; saddle-coped parapet. Skew-arched spans.

Statement of Interest

The skew-arch allows a bridge to be built at an angle to whatever it is crossing, and also has greater strength than an ordinary arch. It was built as part of the Crofthead and Kilmarnock Extension Railway, which opened in 1871. The plan in the National Archives is dated 1865, but seems to have narrower spans, so the design may have been altered.
