Description

Earlier to mid 18th century single storey and attic stable range with hayloft, now converted to museum with later rear addition. Sandstone rubble. Crowstepped gables, pedimented dormers.

E (ENTRANCE) ELEVATION: ground floor openings now infilled with timber with glazed upper halfs. Opening to left, bipartite rectangular opening to right with stone mullion and entrance door. To far right, further opening. At attic, two pedimented dormers to left and pedimented opening to right breaking eaves.

W ELEVATION: blind with harled crowstepped late 20th century off-centre single-storey projecting gable wing.

Timber sash and case windows with horns, predominantly 12-pane. Modern pantiles.

INTERIOR: comprehensively modernised to form museum.

BOUNDARY WALL: section of rubble wall to N.

Statement of Interest

Part of an A-group with Kinneil House, 2 and 4, 6-8 Duchess Anne Cottages, Kinneil House bridge and Kinneil House walled garden.

An important and intergral part of the Kinneil Estate, this former stable and hayloft is situated a short distance to the E from Kinneil House itself. The Duchess Anne Cottages form a particularly picturesque group and are excellent examples of Scottish vernacular architecture.

Kinneil Museum lies within the amenity zone for the Antonine Wall recommended in D N Skinner The Countryside of the Antonine Wall (1973), and which will form the basis of the buffer zone, yet to be defined, for the proposed Antonine Wall World Heritage Site.
