Statement of Interest

This is a distinctive building occupying an entire block near the Harbour area of Aberdeen. It is one of the few remaining historic industrial buildings in Aberdeen. Its multi-gabled elevation to Wellington Street is of particular note and the building adds significantly to the streetscape in an area which was formerly dominated by heavy industry. It is an important part of Aberdeen's industrial and social history.

This is the only remaining building from the extensive Hall Russell & Co Ltd shipbuilding yard. It is understood that this building functioned as the engineering works and is described on the 2nd Edition Ordnance Survey Map as Aberdeen Iron Works. Hall Russell & Co was founded in 1864 and produced iron and steel ships, from cargo vessels to warships. They also built many vessels for the Aberdeen Steam Trawling and Fishing Co. The firm closed in 1992.
