Description

1922. Sandstone ashlar War Memorial to members of Black Watch Battalion set beside Gelly Burn and amidst woodland in Caird Park. Broad stepped base of ashlar blocks. Base course to plinth with overhanging cornice above providing base for freestanding Corinthian columns to each corner. Sandstone ashlar pier to centre with segmental pedimented panels inscribed with names of fallen soldiers. Plain entablature with deep corniced eaves course above and central domed stone roof.

Statement of Interest

The Mains Parish War Memorial is an unusual example of a First World War Memorial. It was designed to incorporate a fountain. The form of the memorial is unusual in Scotland with its freestanding Corinthian columns and central stone domed roof. Few other examples of a freestanding memorial of this date are thought to include a decorative fountain.

The setting of the memorial is appropriate to a building which is commemorating the dead. The setting within a sylvan location composed of trees and an adjacent stream evokes the Elysian fields through which in Greek mythology represented the resting place of the souls of the heroic and virtuous. The use of the Corinthian order for the column capitals is also a reference to classical Greek heroism as the Corinthian order was originally Athenian in origin.
