Description

Circa 1935 and circa 1950. 2 timber game larders, sited to rear of stables.

Earlier larder polygonal, boarded timber on granite base, with overhanging eaves supported on slender polygonal timber posts; door to one face with gauze screened panel; gauze screens to 4 faces with gauze screened panels above and above door. Tarred felt polygonal roof with timber flashing and finial.

Later larder rectangular-plan, lathed timber on concrete base. Principal elevation with 2 doors (2-leaf to left) flanking high fixed, gauze screened window. Similarly high gauze screened windows to other faces. Grey slate roof with lead flashings and louvred timber ventilator with ball finial.

Statement of Interest

A Group with Birkhall with Summerhouse, Wendy House, Garden Gate and Terraces, Birkhall Drive Bridge, Rope Bridge and Stables.

See more ornate larders at Balmoral Castle and Allt-na-Giubhsaich. The larders are grouped with the house at Birkhall, the drive and rope bridges and stables. Critical ancillaries supporting a sporting estate, built clearly evidencing their function.
