Description

Probably William Smith, 1858. Single storey and attic T-plan lodge with single storey projections, sited on bend in road by entrance gates (listed separately); Scottish seventeenth century and Tudor details. Stugged granite with base course, corbel course to jettied gableheads; crowstepped gables; chamfered arrises. Timber mullions and transoms.

NE elevation: gabled elevation to jamb at centre with tripartite window at ground in advanced corbelled panel with stone piended roof; square, cross window to attic in gablehead above with hoodmould. Arcaded loggia (4-centred arches) of 3 bays in re-entrant angle to right with gablet coped and stepped parapet rising to tablet over centre arch. 2-leaf panelled door by re-entrant angle. Gabled projection on return to outer left with window to NE and door and window to service porch of piend-roofed addition.

NW elevation: gabled elevation to jamb at centre with canted stone window at ground, lead-roofed with square, hoodmoulded cross window to attic above; fleur -de-lys finial. Return elevation of arcaded loggia to left with timber in-fill. Single storey bay to right rising as screen with corbelled parapet with 2 narrow, small-pane windows, shielding lean-to porch behind.

SE elevation: gabled and piended projections to right (see above). Cross window to left with corbelled stone attic window above breaking eaves in crowstepped dormerheaded with shield panel.

Sash and case windows. Graded grey slates. Gablehead stacks. Bracketed skewputts. Cast-iron pedestrian gate to rear.

NE elevation abutted to N and S by granite quadrant walls with saddleback coping.

B Group with War Memorial, Entrance Gates, Bridge Lodge and Gatepiers, Quadrant Walls and Lamp Standards.

Originally known as Bridge Lodge, giving this name to the later property across the drive when it ceased to be a sanatorium. It is in an A Group with the Bridge Lodge, and Entrance Gates, Gatepiers, Walls and Lamp Standards, listed separately. Part of the entrance ensemble heralding the castle approach, tailored in estate livery.
