Description

Dated 1862. Granite obelisk sited on raised ground, on stepped dais and square, ashlar pedestal with billetted cornice crowned by Greek block pediment and acroteria to each face, circa 24' high. Shield panel to 1 face of pedestal, inscribed with gilded dedication.

Statement of Interest

The inscription reads: 'This obelisk was erected to the memory of His Royal Highness Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, Consort of Her Majesty Queen Victoria, by the Servants and Tenants upon the estates of Balmoral, Abergeldie and Birkhall, as an humble tribute to the affection of their beloved master, 1862'. It is the partner of the later obelisk to Queen Victoria, similarly erected by the tenants. Although the Queen had contemplated erecting an obelisk to Prince Albert herself, upon being told that the servants wished to do so she selected a design sketched by Beaton and requested that it be made by one of the Prince's servants and that Robertson select the site. It was completed by May 1863. Further example of rich furnishings across the estate landscape.
