Description

Circa 1855, painted 1929. Bronze, life-size statue of wild boar seated on haunches, after example at Florence (Palazzo Signoria?), sited by copse to S of Castle.

Statement of Interest

A Group with Balmoral Castle, Chamois Deer Statue, Putto Fountain on Eastern Parterre, Roe Deer Statue and the Shell Drinking Fountain in Sunken Garden.

The Inventory quotes the Gardeners' Chronicle of 1876, stating that there were originally two boars, each sited in the centre of a terrace to the west of the Castle. The Simpson painting shows one boar at SW corner of western parterre. The Royal Archive notes that in June 1929 stags, boar, chamois and roe deer sited to the west of the Castle were painted. Significant component of castle's immediate foreground.
