Description

Circa 1850. Single storey and attic, 3-bay, rectangular-plan 3-bay cottage with later extension to rear, now subdivided. Harled with granite cills.

NE elevation: open, gabled timber porch at centre with segmental-arched opening on timber columns with stop-chamfered arrises and cornices, echoing pilasters; shield panel in gablehead; cusp-headed timber railing; swept roof. Windows in flanking bays with small, gabled, slate-hung dormers above, timber gableheads and swept eaves.

Gabled, en suite addition to rear.

4-pane glazing in sash and case windows with pronounced astragal at centre. Grey slates, purple to porch and rear. Gablehead granite stacks.

Statement of Interest

B Group with Burnside, Craig Gowan, Craig Gowan Memorial Drinking Basin, Craiglourigan Cottage, 1 and 2 Jubilee Cottages, Post Office Shop and Tigh-Na-Barr, Rhebreck and Rhebreck Water Tank.

Presumably this is the cottage described in the archives as that built for Mrs Grant in 1850. The porch is a variant of that at the principal cottage, Allt-na-giubhsaich, and therefore presumably also a later addition. Simple cottage picking up on estate detailing and contributing positively to the hamlet's streetscape. Part of the group at Easter Balmoral.
