Circa 1910. Roughly hewn granite obelisk with inscribed plinth and stepped base. Inscribed, 'A. D. 1468. Above this spot was fought the bloody battle of Stalc, in which many hundreds fell, when the Stewarts and the Maclarens, their allies, in defence of Dugald, chief of Appin, son of Sir John Stewart, Lord of Lorn and Innermeath, defeated the combined forces of the Macdougalls and the Macfarlanes'.Statement of Interest
This memorial commemorates the defeat of the MacDougalls by the Stewarts at the Battle of Stalcaire in 1468. It is situated on a steep outcrop of rock within the churchyard of the Scottish Episcopal St Cross Church (or Church Of The Holy Cross) at Portnacroish, 450 metres west of Castle Stalker. Immediately behind the churchyard is Laggan na Falla (the hollow of treachery) where the heaviest fighting of the battle of Stalc took place.
