Sir Roger Smith, Knight d.1655 aged 84. Below, his first wife, Jane Heron (daughter of Sir Edward Heron of Longtoft, Lincs, Baron of the Exchequer). She d. 1599 aged 26 (One son Edward, one daughter Jane) and then his second wife Anne Goodman. (daughter of Thomas Goodman of Aldgate, Middx, descended from Goosman alias Goodman in Spain), She d. 1652 aged 66, (Twenty two sons and daughters). The folk tale goes, that as a witch, she could transform herself into a cat. The red mark on her wrist that spills to her dress (traces of iron mineral in the marble) was said to be an injury received when she was a cat. Nearby Edmondthorpe Hall burned down in 1943. A cook threw a pan of hot fat at a white cat by the hearth and this led to the fire. Or so they do say hereabouts. (Photo Jun 2007).
