Abbey Church of St Mary, Tewkesbury: the transept

Uploader's Comments

Dating from the 1102, the abbey was surrended to the commissioners of Henry VIII in 1539 but the people of Tewkesbury saved the abbey from destruction. Insisting that it was their parish church, which they had the right to keep, they bought it from the Crown for the value of its bells and lead roof. Sir George Gilbert Scott undertook restoration work, completedn in 1879.
